Power-Over-Fiber Using Double-Clad Fibers

Power-over-fiber (PWoF) is an attractive technology for transmitting power utilizing optical fibers. Because fibers are nonconductive lines, and can transmit data signals simultaneously, PWoF enables us to provide usages that not feasible with conventional electric supply systems using copper wires. This study presents overview of various types fibers, introduces a practical application powering remote antenna units (RAUs) in mobile communications. To RAU, the author’s group has worked on double-clad which comprise single-mode core inner cladding surrounds core. The structure more suitable simultaneous high-speed high-power feed light transmission than other demonstrate feasibility, experimental demonstrations authors’ introduced detail. In addition, latest performance comparison reported so far presented, future prospects described.
